Scope and Contents

The volume begins with a brief general account of Scottish islands followed by detailed descriptions of the Western isles.

The fullest descriptions are of Mull, Iona, Harris and Lewis, Islay, Skye, Uist and in particular, St. Kilda (folios 21 verso, 26 verso, 27 verso).

Towards the end of the volume are transcripts of ‘Genealogies of the Chief Clans of the Isles’ (folio 34 verso) and `Descriptio Insularum Orchadiarum (folio 35).

Scope and Contents

The collection includes the creations of 1605, but not those of 1618.

The section on English heraldry (folio 1) contains the arms of the various rulers and their nobles from William I to James I. The Scottish section (folio 104) contains the arms of the queens of Scotland from St Margaret to Anne of Denmark, followed by those of the nobility.

The collection includes: 188 letters of and to Henry Cockburn, Lord Cockburn, 1806-1854; genealogical collections; and correspondence of Francis Jeffrey Cockburn and his wife, Elizabeth Anne, some of or concerning her father Robert Pitcairn of Hobart Town, Van Diemen`s Land, circa 1812-1887.
